So I was dating this guy since December, and things were going great, or so I thought. We spent so much time together, I was cool with all his friends, knew his mom and bro, etc. however he is an international student due to go back after graduation in May. He went to coachella with his friends back home and one of his friends who I don't follow posted a pic of him holding hands with another girl. I confront him through text. This is the convo (skim if need be):

Monday night
Me: I wish you would've just been honest with me. I just want to know, why did I deserve this?

Him: Honest about what?

Me: Is the girl in that picture your girlfriend?

Him: Can i explain everything in person?

Him: Its not what you're thinking

Tuesday morning
Him: I wanted to be honest with you but i didn't want to hurt you because you dont deserve it. I dont know what i was thinking. I hurt both you and her. Ill tell you everything now and i understand if you dont want us being friends again. Before i say anything, george didn't know anything about this. i kept him out of the loop because he really does love you and your relationship with him. I told him she was just a friend. The answer to your question is yes she is my girlfriend. We started dating a couple months ago. She lives in kuwait so it was long distance until this trip. She found out and i told her about everything as well. She also told me that i owe you an apology which is true. Im sorry. I didn't mean to. I've been wanting to apologize to you and tell you the truth in person. I thought white lies would cover up my mistakes and id feel better but no. Neither of you deserved it

Question: should I respond or keep ignoring him? Would you give him a chance to explain?

This is exciting. When my teacher first brought it up as a warmup question, I thought he was joking around. My teacher later then explained how his race isn't mentioned and gave examples. I also told my classmates that it could be possible that Gatsby was "white passing" IF he was black. I've never thought of this which is why I think it's pretty cool. I like to find theories or hidden Easter eggs in stories and histories.

White passing is basically when a mixed race black person can pass as a white person like my example in the poll.

Here are some examples to this possibility:
1. Gatsby doesn't show his face to his party guests
2. Tom (who's a racist) had a negative reaction to their first meeting.
3. Gatsby didn't inherit his money, he had to work hard for it.
4. His parents lived on a farm and were low class (they could've possibly been a mixed couple?)
5. Gatsby changed his name and lied about his past because he was embarrassed of it.

If he was white passing then all of this would've been possible, back in the 1920's white passing people could lie about their black heritage and some would even consider it embarrassing despite having a small or less percentage of black dna.
