I would say it's MUCH greater than what has been reported. Two recent counts looking at excess deaths found that the actual death toll may have been double or even quadruple the official death toll (and in both cases, the official death toll was less than the lower bounds of the 95% confidence interval).

For those of you who aren't aware, "excess deaths" refers to how many more people are dying during a pandemic year than previous other years.

I know a lot of people have been trying to push the narrative the COVID deaths are over-counted because people who had covid but died of a heart attack or bacterial infection in their lungs (so their deaths shouldn't have been attributed to COVID). Problem: we've known since 2017 that having a respiratory infection makes you 15 times more likely to suffer from a heart attack so if someone had a heart attack while they were sick with COVID, there was a 14 out of 15 chance they would have survived has they not contracted COVID so it would be appropriate to count that as a COVID death. With bacterial infections in the lungs, well in all probability the bacterial infection started with some bacteria growing in necrotic tissue in the lungs; tissue that was that way because of the viral infection. So saying those shouldn't be counted as COVID deaths is like saying "HIV never killed anyone".
