a fad is described as a short lived intense craze , but that eventually fizzes out. nipple piercing has actually been around for some time. in 2004 there was the so called nipplegate at the superbowl and the piercing spiked in popularity for a little bit than faded away for a number of years. it didn't gain in popularity until a number of celebrities started getting it 4 or 5 years ago , in the last 1 or 2 years there has been a significant spike in the number of nipple pierced people. its actually becoming one of the more common piercings

but I'm personally not sure if its here to stay? or it is some sort of short lived trend. but who knows everyone said the belly piercing was a fad in 2000's but its still very common today on young women and seems to be here to stay. but I don't know if the nipple piercing has the same staying power the belly piercing had , it was more acceptable , a 30 year old suburban mom could get one and show it off without anyone thinking twice but a nipple piercing is still more taboo and many women are self conscious of there body so don't like showing off there boobs or necessary want others to know they have a piercing there.
