Search Results: different ethnicity

As a Korean-American guy, I have absolutely nothing against South Asians and have a couple of close friends from India but we're not the same race or ethnic group. The way the term "Asian" is used in the US is rather confusing because they treat it as both a race and ethnicity simultaneously, which is not what it is. I look at the label "Asian" as more of a geographical term, rather than a blanket race/ethnicity label.

South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis, etc.) and Northeast and Southeast Asians (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, etc.) are racially and far culturally different from each other. The only similarities we share, are the fact that our countries are all in the Asia continent, India, and China having similar overpopulation problems, and some South Asians, particularly Indians, putting a very huge emphasis on education for their children like East Asians do. That's where the similarities between us end.

I never understood why Westerners (especially Americans and Canadians) have an obsession with race, ethnicity and labels for them, while lumping one group all together by continental origin.
