I cannot imagine a life without books.
I'd rather read a good book than talk to a boring person. At least you can learn something new from a good book.
But apparently, I am quickly becoming the minority.

The share of Americans who read for pleasure on a given day has fallen by more than 30 percent since 2004, according to the 2017 American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This has happened across all age groups.

Historically, women have always been more voracious readers of books than men. However, both sexes have shown a steady decline in the amount of personal-interest reading they do.

About a quarter of American adults (24%) say they haven’t read a book in whole or in part in 2017 whether in print, electronic or audio form. (Pew Research Center)

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why the number of people who read for personal interest is steadily diminishing. In a world where instant gratification is only a click away via social media, and Hulu, Netflix, HBO, and their ilk are offering more shows than the world has ever seen in previous decades, it's no surprise that people - and young people especially - are just no longer as interested in reading as people a generation or several generations ago were.

Of course, people also tend to read less books in times of economic hardship. Many factors also come into play: families who earn below 30k read less, college-educated people read more, etc.
