Chuck Schumer was asked whether the rise of the Democratic Socialists of America is good for the Democratic Party. Rather than reject the movement or confront its published agenda, he said Democrats are a “big tent” party and described that as a strength.

He is not alone. Gavin Newsom has explicitly defended the inclusion of socialists in the Democratic coalition, arguing for “addition, not subtraction” and saying the party should focus on what unites its factions. Pete Buttigieg has acknowledged that some Democrats go too far for him, but he likewise emphasized what the factions share instead of drawing a firm boundary against the DSA-aligned left.

I disagree with that approach. A political party can tolerate ordinary disagreement without welcoming a movement whose published program calls for abolishing the Senate, replacing the presidency and Supreme Court with institutions subordinate to Congress, expanding public ownership, and fundamentally reconstructing America’s constitutional and economic system.

Those are not minor differences over tax rates, healthcare spending, or regulatory policy. They concern the basic structure of the United States government and economy.

Calling the Democratic Party a “big tent” does not answer whether that tent should have any ideological boundaries. Schumer, Newsom, Buttigieg, and other Democratic leaders should say plainly whether they reject the DSA’s radical institutional agenda or are willing to let the movement continue gaining influence inside their party.

I voted Disagree. A broad coalition can be a strength, but a party that refuses to establish any limits risks being captured by its most organized and radical faction.
