Why does this guy keep staring and hovering around me in public?

I’ve been seeing this guy for about 7-8 months. Nothing too serious. But every time we see each other put in public he always is staring, and watching me. He even tries to get close to me. He doesn’t say anything. He will just stand by me. He will even stare when other guys try to approach me. Why would a guy do this?

Maybe because you’ve been casually seeing each other (but in private) for 7–8 months, he feels a connection, but probably has no idea what the "rules" are when you run into each other in public. Because things aren't strictly serious, he might be afraid of overstepping or making a scene, which would result in him just hovering and staring silently vs just saying hello. Him being watchful when other guys approach sounds like a mix of interest and some unexpressed jealousy.

At the same time though, it’s a 2 way street. So if you keep catching him staring, there’s a good chance you are looking his way just as much. He might actually be just as perplexed by the constant eye contact as you are. Like he sees you looking, wonders what it means, and moves closer to try and read the vibe, but then freezes up.

In any case, the easiest way to kill the awkwardness is to just wave him over next time. Even just a quick, playful, "Hey, you know you can come say hi right?" could clear the air.
