What does it mean when a guy avoids saying whether he has a girlfriend or not?

I saw a coworker outside of work with a girl the other day, I want going to say anything until he approached me saying he saw me with my friend and then I said "oh yeah, you were with your girlfriend right?" Then he avoided answering. Then later he said sorry for brining it up for some reason, and I was like "your good, I was just confused cause you didn't answer if that was your girlfriend." And he still didn't answer after that.

Honestly it's none of my business if it was or wasn't, but I'm just curious now why he was avoiding saying anything.

Some people don't like to be caught with their "pants down". There are a number of reasons why someone would not want to admit they are in a relationship or have a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Some of the reasons could be that they want to leave the back door open for a side hustle, that they don't think that their partner is good looking enough, that others may judge them on the choice of partners or simply because they don't want to expose their private life to others and let those judge them.

Whatever the reason, this happens way more than one would think.

Maybe he’s just not interested in telling people his business. I know it took me about 3 years before I mentioned having a him friend. Some people just like their privacy. I’m sure there’s other reasons which others have stated, but no one said what I said so I figured I would.

Yess I assumed that too but one of his aquaintances previously told me he 'might' have a girlfriend, but he hasn't heard anything about her for over a year so he is not sure. (It was completely unrelated and someone else brought it up so I just remembered that conversation)

Like I mentioned maybe he just likes his privacy. I know I do. I don’t tell people much about myself. I don’t even tell them I was in the military.

He may be too embarrassed to say he is single or he is has someone but wants to have fun with you. He could be gay and not want to admit it.
