My ex said happy birthday to me for years after we broke up, and we had a terrible break up and didn’t ever talk. When his birthday came sometimes I didn’t realize until the next day or something.

I never said it back because I’ve been with someone else and he eventually stopped but it lasted a long time and kinda made me feel like he was still into me and I was right.
We eventually talked many years later and he told me he misses me and still loves me and wished things were different.
I think when the day comes up, people may or may not remember but it doesn't mean anything. It’s a memory, with someone you once loved so it’s not just going to go away completely.
If you are telling them happy birthday every year after a breakup, then that’s something more. In my case it turned out to be this way.
or if you are sitting and daydreaming about it, that prob means you miss them a bit.

I wish my exwife happy birthday, we didn't talk to each other for a long time, then reached out to me, so we keep in touch, wish each other happy birthday, merry Christmas, and anniversary.
She lives across the country so we rarely ever see each other.
