Left on read but not blocked or deleted?

So my ex broke up with me and said we could be friends and yeah I know that usually doesn't work and is just a way of saying it better but he said he'll always be there if I need anything and then a few messages down the line left me on read and it's been a few days, first day he seen all my statuses and just stopped, why not just block me then? And how long should I wait before knowing there won't ever be a response, been 5 days already, last time he left me on read and spoke 2 me two days later so I don't know whether I should move on or wait, it's so confusing, any thoughts or suggestions? Did e perhaps already delete me or is he taking space?

You should move on, yes. He ended things with you and gave you the classic friends treatment, and you already know that's not true, he's just trying to let you down easy. He's left you on read probably in the hopes that you'll get the message and not reach out anymore, because he probably doesn't want to have to block you.

"but he said he'll always be there if I need anything" - if that were true he wouldn't leave you on read. He was just trying to be as gentle as possible by breaking up. Either way, don't spend time waiting or hoping for him to change his mind. That is an awful prison to be in and I was in that once myself. If he was meant to be in your life he would've never broken up with you.

So why not just block me instead of all the other stuff? Then it's final and then worse he said his done with this for "now"

Because he either doesn't want to be mean to you, or because he wants to leave that door open in case he wants to slip back into your life later on, especially if he's saying he's "done with this for now." But even if that IS the case, do you really want somebody back who discards you now, and can later on decide they want to come back and choose you when they want to? Do you think that would really be fair to you? He would be treating you like an option.

Believe me, I once asked the same question of why an ex didn't just block me and only left me on Read. There honestly is no positive answer to it, and just because they didn't block you doesn't mean they necessarily ever want to come back. Don't take it as any sign of hope. Rather it's just something to keep you confused and hanging on to an idea that they could change their mind. Anyone who is doing things like him is ultimately not somebody you really want.

your an ex. i've never blocked an ex, especially one to whom i've said I'll always be there if you need it. can't call me from jail if i have you blocked. but you're still an ex so i'm not necessarily going to be responding to your small talk bs. you need to start the process of moving on and understanding he is not going to be there on that level

Because you broke up! What's the point of breaking up and staying in touch? That's childish. You need to let each other go after a breakup staying around is just toxic. That's preventing the other to move on and giving them hopes that you might get back together.
