Guys, When a guy says “I was starting to fall in love with you”, does he really mean it or is he just saying that to be nice?

When my ex broke up with me he said that he was sad about the breakup because he was starting to fall in love with me but needed to end the relationship due to him needing to take care of his sick father and he didn’t think that I would be happy with his lifestyle.

Yeah , look its really hard to break up with someone , he is just saying this to make himself feel better and soften the blow a little , I know for me , its something I just hate having to do it , he feels badly about it.
