Your post is full of assumptions and prejudice. What makes you think she is upper middle class? She's from Manchester. Most people consider Bali to be a dream vacation destination, not a hell hole. She fell in love on holidays with a local guy that is supremely fit and tanned, in part because of all the surfing he does. He owns a restaurant, so is doing okay financially. Anyone that has been to Bali will tell you that the locals are wonderful to be around because they are so friendly and happy, a stark contrast to the prevailing outlook in Manchester. The climate is also much more appealing. She has presumably found love as well as a way to turn her wonderful holiday into a new lifestyle. Many Australians, particularly Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) mining workers, move to Bali so that they can live like kings.
