What do people prefer when engaging on dating apps?

I’ve had a very slow 2 months when it comes to finding people to talk to.

I fear that I may waste their time or that they haven’t allowed me to speak to them.

Early days I followed the philosophy of Liking their profiles and if they responded then that’s how I’d go about it, but nobody returned the likes and I don’t know what to make of it.

They didn’t look at my profile so that debunks answers relating to that.

Do they expect you to message without mutual approval?

I’m asking because I wish to be respectful when it comes to conducting conversation in an environment such as the one on one of those apps and perhaps I’m overthinking it but that’s how I go about things.
