What do you think is the worst thing about crushing on someone?

Knowing that they won't like us back and on the same time a small gesture or friendly message or smile from that person will make us think that they also feel the same for us and like us back. This hope is the worst thing from my perspective because it keeps us hooked behind a person who won't like us back and still we would do anything for that person staying in hope.

I've been down that road a lot of times. I had a crush on a friend and he "liked me as a friend, nothing more and I want to stay that way." Another is that you find out they are either with someone or like someone else already.
