Would you continue to text someone who only sends one or two word responses?

There's a guy I like. He pursued me. The problem is, he only responds with one or two words. There's no conversation.

Sometimes it's one word then a 'lol' after it. It's stale and boring. It just seems pointless messaging him. It's made me lose interest in him

You need to specifically tell him that you want to have a conversation.

In the 21st Century, men are used to getting ghosted if they show interest in a girl. Therefore, we are always careful not to message too much. If we send too many messages, she could easily block us. And then it would be over.
If you truly like someone, you don't want to take that risk [of getting blocked. (Or even ghosted.)]

Chances are, you gave him some signal earlier that you weren't interested in him. (If not outright telling him that.) He hasn't forgotten that. He's playing it safe and making sure he respects your wishes and doesn't cross any boundaries. He doesn't want to harass you.

That's a personal frustration of mine as well, but it could be that he simply finds you uninteresting. I'll assume you've asked him questions, or given him an option to send something of substance, and he still won't engage in real convo.. then he's either terminally bad at texting or has no real desire to text with you. If texting is the only way you communicate, then it's probably best that you look elsewhere regardless of the true reason.

He wants to meet up but I'd feel weird meeting him when I don't know him much. If he'd been a better texter, I'd have gotten to know him more

I mean, unless you are totally done, now would be a great time to bring it up- something like 'I'd be happy to meet but I don't feel like I know you well, it seems like you haven't had much to say to me recently' or something to that effect.

No love lost if you choose not to pursue him but before deciding, maybe you could have an actual date. I know some people aren’t good testers or would rather not text at all and would rather hang out in person. Like with my boyfriend we don’t carry convos through text, we check in here and there through the day then see each other later.

It can be frustrating and discouraging to try to have a conversation with someone who only responds with short, one or two-word answers. It's possible that the guy you like may be shy or uncomfortable with texting, or simply not interested in having a conversation with you. If you are interested in continuing to pursue a relationship with him, you could try to initiate a conversation with open-ended questions or topics to encourage more detailed responses. If he continues to only respond with short answers, it may be a sign that he is not interested in continuing to communicate with you, and you may want to consider moving on and finding someone who is more engaged and communicative.
