Well, if you love not having a partner around a whole lot, and then it's going to be for you. There are duty days that will take him for 24 hours and it could be anywhere from every 4 days to every 8. For me they cycled between both a 3 day and 4 day cycle just to give us even more duty days.
Then there is the deployments/underways. This might be for 3 months, and for me, the longest was 1 year and 3 months. I was the dependent when that happened. Most of the ships are nukes now so the Navy takes that as just a great opportunity to make it longer and longer.
You will be the dependent if the marriage stuff happens. Expect him to have to move every 3 years and you don't get to go along for the ride if you're not married. Since becoming a dependent, I've gone from San Diego to Yokosuka Japan, back to the States in Washington state, and now I have to move to Rhode Island. You will be left behind without the marriage stuff coming into play. Even more time left alone.
So if you end up finding yourself a dependent... beware of other dependents. A lot of them are pure sluts and the way they end up dealing with all that free time is to do what sluts do. They will try to friend you and get you to be a partner in crime. The bad female friends for females always starts before the dudes on the side come into play... I'm a dude, so it's different for me, but it's two sides to the same coin... you'll probably never run into a stay at home Dad like me to be real. Other dependents are complete shit shows. They only had kids to lock themselves in the relationship, but they don't even watch their own kids. Don't be like them... get hobbies and do stuff with your time. I have a full home gym setup, I play guitar, and I pursue my interests like talking shit here on this site... and take care of your kids. So many dependents get fat af and they just don't care about anything but sitting on their ass.
He could be gay.
I've noticed quite a few men in the Navy be gay because they are surrounded mostly by other men, so it's like porn to them.
Case in point: Around 1984, I knew one guy, Marlon, a genius at physics and who could have done all sorts of things after he got his BS including go for a PhD.
Instead of being in the Navy ROTC while he was going for his BS, he JOINED the Navy AFTER graduating to be in a submarine. Back then in the middle 1980s, women could not serve on submarines and that didn't change until 2010 with the first woman serving in a submarine crew in 2011.
Marlon always was a little off (*) and I strongly suspect he was gay and being stuck underwater with a boatload of men would be Heaven for a gay man.
(*) He was rather weird and asked questions that crossed the line. I don't think he had Asperger's Syndrome, but I think he was trying to determine if I was gay too.
He has no control over his life. The needs of the Navy will ALWAYS come first. Not you. These relationships are hard but thousands have made them work
