Show him you hear what he says by seeking a slightly deeper understanding of what he says. Say, "In what way?" "Give me some examples" "How might that impact the results?" "Help me see it through your eyes" "What options did you consider before making that decision, and what do you see as the pros and cons of the different options?" In other words, show interest in understanding his perspective and facilitating his exploration and discovery. Let him know you believe in his ability to identify and resolve issues. It's about showing him you're involved and care, not that you feel a need to compete with him.
Never tell him what he should or shouldn't do or interrogate him. Respond in subtle ways, letting him know you remain involved.

If you have nothing else to talk about, you can always tell him about the other guys you've dated. Believe it or not, a lot of guys love hearing about your previous boyfriends.
I unfortunately have no previous boyfriends. He's my first boyfriend.
