Dating just mean going out on a dates. A person can be meeting more than one person and going on dates to get to know several people, the relationship comes when they pick one, forsake others and commit to just one.

They are synonymous. If you say we are dating you mean you and the person in question are dating. When you say we are in a relationship you mean you and the person in question are in a relationship. They mean the exact same thing they have for a long time.

But saying "I'm dating" and "I'm in a relationship" sounds different. Dating kinda implies playing the field, experimenting, but a relationship is very one on one and exclusive
