Do everyone really know each other in london?

Question

I was on a date with this wonderful man and he told me some interesting things, like how most big families know each other there in London and how it’s a small city. I was surprised, is it so?

I couldn’t tell you considering I never been there but I know I have family there , because my Grandmother is from England and my grandfather met her there when he was stationed there in the Air force during WW2 , and they fell in love and she moved with him to the USA. I would love to visit there sometime because I have heard so much history about it through my grandparents and I have cousins there that I would like to meet one day. I heard people are very close to each other there so it’s more than likely that they do.

It is common behavior in the highest social spheres to "befriend" with other members of the  upper class, in any country in the world . It's not exactly befriending as it is an expected pact between members in order to create/provide a  network of valuable information, marriages or influential positions in society.  It is a way to ensure that the high level tribe never comes out of the picture, stays above in the ladder,  survival and social reproduction manifested.

If he's from an upperclass family in London, he would be correct in saying that the upper class families all know each other. But there's no way that everyone in metro London know each other.

Maybe sort of -- it's not that everyone in London knows everyone, but people with certain interests may be fairly well connected. There are maybe 3 million people in the Dallas metropolitan area, but if you consider only the people who attend theater and go to jazz clubs etc. then it's just a few thousand.
