What do you study?

I studied Communication studies However my field of work is in IT.
In high School I started to do IT work however, I was fairly illiterate so I was fairly shy and limited in learning anything. I was an angry high school kid that hated the education system. I thought that because the future was in technology that I could get by with just a rough understanding of English. The reality showed me I was a fool. My reality was that I was ashamed that I couldn't read in high school. I never really read anything books growing up. And I have a small list of books that I have read to this day however, I recognized the power of language through my internship program. I thought I could get by with just knowing how to read instructions and that was far from the reality of the world. My internship program helped be gain life skills and better understanding of what is required in today's work than school ever did. I saw my peers that lack Technical experience and knowledge however they can deliver great speeches and show leadership. I on the other hand could not. So after my internship program, I made it my goal to be a better reader, writer, and speaker because I saw the power it had to move the class room or the entire audience.
The way I see it now is how does someone make a connection to another person let alone a large group of people? Its not a matter of having the knowledge of all the words in a dictionary. You have to know your audience and entertain a new idea or message. We can only do so much alone. As much as we may make fun of communication studies or the arts, it just shows how we limit our understanding of language or any form of communication. Knowledge is power. And I now truly understand what that means now. Although my professors in my profession have advocated that I should specialize in my field to make the most money, I find it boring if I cannot make connections between many different fields within IT. The IT field is VAST and all interconnected in one way of another. I rather start off as a jack of all trades to see what the IT field has to offer than limit myself to a particular field then pick one that I like best.
So what is Communication Studies?
It is to get a better understanding of how we communicate with each other. How do we study that? That is hard because of privacy concerns and the problem of when people know that they are record they change how they speak. However, when we do get consent to record and analyze the conversation we have long conversations to get them adjusted and comfortable to the point that they possible forget they are being recorded. Our study isn't limited to just conversations either. Art is a form of communication and yeah make fun of it however, have you seen a performance that made you cry? Or a piece of art that made you see the world a little differently? Ever wondered how slang is made and the function of it in a society, culture, or language? Do you think there is only style communication of being a leader? What does that look like? Would it work for being a firefighter chief, CEO, lead scientist, etc? There are different styles and method of communications but we don't really think about it. What about social media? What's a snapchat? Tiktok? Youtube? Vine? WorldStar? How are people effective in their communication over any of these platforms? What can we learn from this? What about Marketing? How has it changed? Is marketing all good or bad? Examples?(there are a lot)
The impact of what we say, how we say it, and interact is critical to how the world moves forward as we become interconnected. Crossing languages for business or negotiations are different and you can come off as disrespectful even with the utmost of good intentions because some gestures can be seen as rude or something is lost in translation. Example: Japanese Business have a strict way in making decisions and if a foreigner doesn't know how to follow it they will lose a business deal.
I hope this was helpful.
Very interesting. I’m also interested in communication. I worked at a sales company for 2 years (just a job aside of high school) where I learned all sorts of techniques and tricks to convince people. Of course I didn’t learn as much as you did during your studies but I did find it very interesting. I still apply some of those techniques when I need to convince someone. The funny thing is it works😂
currently in high school, doing Algebra 2, Rhetoric, History, literature, physics, and grammar. and because those classes were chosen for me. but I'll be done with those next week.
I studied social work for my undergraduate degree and I'm currently completing my Master's degree in the same subject. I chose it because I had a passion for helping others, empathizing with the struggles of other people, and collaborating with multiple systems to find solutions to problems. I am especially interested in the topic of trauma and how that impacts brain development, mental disorders, and behaviors in children and adults. I love talking to people about trauma, teaching my clients how their trauma history continues to impact them, and establishing treatment plans to address it.
My undergrad is in nuclear and health physics, with minors in accounting and philosophy. My masters, in progress, is in fine arts/printmaking-photography and I’d like to do a PhD in physics sometime later.

I study accounting and I plan on adding pre-law. I chose accounting because I love that it's like another language to learn and pre-law because of How To Get Away With Murder ◡̈
I study computer science, robotics and 3D printing in my spare time for fun, but I've had to work FT since I was 16 so I've never really had the chance to join a formal program.
Teaching yourself takes longer, but preserves ones creativity and enthusiastic, so I don't mind too much.
Machine Learning. I like making bots that are capable of making mature decisions without being biased or opinionated. I feel like the world needs more of that.
I studied psychology for a year. Dropped out because I couldn't deal with the stress. Not sure if I'll go back.
