I'd say getting up to conversation speed. We get a lot of people here learning and they pick up pronunciation pretty easily. Sentence structure throws them a little and as for grammar even the natives struggle. But it's just getting up to conversation speed that's the sticking point for most.

For me, it’s understanding the language when it’s spoken by someone who’s a native speaker of it. I’m really bad with accents.
I'd say finding a reason to use it in an environment where no one relies on you being able to speak it.
