Here's the question: If Kayla left a $10.47 tip on a breakfast that cost $87.25, what percentage was the tip?

If I could use a calculator I could do this easy but I'm not allowed to. I need to know how to do it on paper. Explain as thorough as possible and I'll give best answer

The easiest way to do this is start by dropping decimal by converting from dollars to cents. Then use the old division sign.

8725 doesn't go into 1047 one or more times; so will start.1; and we'll then put 8725 times 0.1 under 1047.

Then subtract the 872.5 from 1047.000

Giving you 174.5. This is when we have to figure about how many times you can fit 8725 into 174.5. 8 times 2 is 16; so I like 0.02. So we'll add it after the 1 on top.

We'll now multiply out 8725 by 0.02; and then we'll then subtract it out.

Since this gives us 0; we can stop here. However, you can continue this cycle if you have anything leftover.

Percentages are per 100; so we'll multiply 0.12 by 100 and it gives us 12%(basically we just have to move the decimal place two digits to the right).

You have to divide and multiply the both the Dollars and the percentage by the same factors.

87,25 : 87,25 and 100 : 87,25

1$= 1,1461318052%

1 x 10,47 and 1,1461318052 x 10,47

10,47$ = 12% (or 12,0000000004% to be exact)

There is a faster way, but with this 3 step calculation its easy and hopefully understandable.
