The stock market generally returns 10% per year over time. There are some good years and some bad years, but over time you will do well. If the Great Depression had been part of your 40 years, you still would have come out on top.

At that rate, if you put $10 a week in starting when you are young, 40 years later you will have $3 million, in addition to whatever you do to make money during your life. Most people can afford more than $10, so it goes up from there.

Invest in a no-fee index fund that cover the whole market, such as the Schwab S&P 500 Index Fund (just as one example).

Once you have that set up you can use *other* money to invest in more exciting things, such as REITS (or actual real estate), gold, movies, classic cars, whatever. Play money where you might do even better, but you can afford to lose, as long as you're always contributing to your main fund.
