I’ve been meaning to read it for years and years and started it this week, about a quarter through. The protagonist’s history of selfishness and regrets is punching me in the gut. I’m at the point where he and his baba are on the bus.

I read that in high school, I think. Maybe middle school. It's a pretty good book, as I recall.

It’s about two boys in Afghanistan who go down different paths as war and corruption tears up the country. One of the boys witnesses the other grow through a severely traumatic event, and his response causes him immense shame and he ends up moving to the US, until someone brings him news.
