Mine gave me an all expenses paid company car. When it got up between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, which took about 2 years, they gave me a new one.

I worked in the field and drove all over the place, so I had a lot of freedom to stop, explore, and do fun things. I could make my own hours as long as I got my work done.

There were side perks that I won't go into.

They matched up to 6% of whatever I contributed to my 401(k).

Great medical, dental and eye insurance.

A pension based on your salary and number of years worked.

They had 10 paid holidays a year. And my vacation time accumulated at a constant rate of 4 weeks (36 hours) per year. I could save up to 6 weeks before it stopped accumulating. So, if I took a vacation, I accumulated more vacation time while I was off.

The office hours were Mon-Thurs 8:00-6:00 with a paid hour for lunch and two 15 minute breaks, and Friday from 8:00-1:15 with a 15 min break. So full time for office workers was a 39 hour work week.

The work was hard, but I met a lot of people and made some good friends. My professional skills gave me a certain status, too.

I was luck to get that job, especially since I didn't have a college degree. I retired after 30 years with a pension and a lot of money in my 401(k).
