What do you call it when you have to be open to new experiences?

What is it called when you have to push yourself to learn a brand new skill or language in school or elsewhere that leads you to pushing yourself very very hard so that you can give your assignment everyday? Is there a name for this experience or is it just "pushing yourself until you DO IT" kinda thing?

If it is hard to do because it is new then that is "not adaptable." But if it is hard because there is a lot to learn, having the patience to work through it is the adapting trait.
