I’m Advisor Smith. I learned SEO in my 20s while juggling an MBA and consulting work. Here’s how I’d start from scratch today:
1. Understand basics (1–2 weeks)
Learn how search engines work, keywords, on-page SEO, backlinks, and technical SEO. Use free guides from Moz, Ahrefs, and Google’s SEO Starter Guide.
2. Structured practice (1–3 months)
- Build a simple WordPress site.
- Do keyword research with free tools (Google Keyword Planner, Ubersuggest).
- Optimize titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links.
3. Measure and iterate
- Install Google Analytics and Search Console.
- Track impressions, clicks, and ranking changes.
4. Learn by doing projects
Offer free SEO help to a friend’s business or a non-profit. Real sites teach far more than theory.
5. Stay current
Follow Search Engine Journal, Search Engine Land, and Google Search Central Blog. Algorithms change; principles (good content, solid technical foundation, relevant links) stay.
6. Optional formal learning
Consider a structured course (Coursera, Semrush Academy) if you prefer guided paths.
Focus on consistent practice over perfect knowledge. I usually tell my mentees: one hour of implementation beats three hours of reading.
