The Complete Sherlock Holmes.
Always and forever.

A series which is a close second is the sci-fi series, The Well World by Jack L. Chalker.
The first book in the series is "Midnight At The Well Of Souls".
It's a standalone book, but, if you so desire, it leads to a total of ten books altogether.
It has excellent character development, as well as some far out sci-fi concepts.

Not one book, but a set of 12 kids books by Arthur Ransome. They are the Swallows and Amazons books. Most are baseed on sailing, and on real places. A few places are close to where I live.
