What do you think about John Oliver?

I love his show and I appreciate his views and style.
He's exactly my kind of comedian. I enjoy his subjects, I enjoy his style, he has a wonderful nihilistic tint that I personally enjoy a lot, and his writing room does amazing work.
I also enjoy that he basically takes HBO's money and goes "fuck you, I do what I want, and thank you" and does weird fucking shit. Like donating a bunch of books to libraries, running counter-misinformation ads, and calling out his own parent company on their bullshit.
Man has balls of steel and a delightful, if bleak, outlook on life. He puts on a great show and I hope to see him live someday.
oh my naive young one, his "fuck you i do what i want" is carefully organized by HBO. he isn't standing up to the establishment... he is their mouthpiece disguised as comedy
@007kingifrit Oh, hey! It's you! Hadn't heard from you, so I was worried. Glad to see you still around.
Aw, thanks for staying I'm young. š
Funny dude! I love his content, he brings up issues in a way that gives it enough seriousness while bringing up comedy elements naturally
john oliver is a propaganda producer who spins topics to take advantage of uninformed 20 year olds and tell them less than half of any story
news isn't supposed to be fun
So what youāre saying is heās no different than any other new outlet these days just targets a different age bracket.
News can be fun, there is no rule news has to be dry and boring but it isnāt supposed to be biased at least as much as humanly possible.
Doesnāt matter if itās Fox News or Breitbart pandering to older folks or Huffpost, CNN, or Oliver pandering to younger folks. Misinformation is misinformation regardless of its political ideology behind it.
Make jokes, have fun, but present the facts and leave the analysis and commentary up to the people or talk radio.
@YOLOIFIC targeting a younger age bracket is inherently evil. they are uninformed and unwise and he's taking advantage of that
there doesn't need to be a rule. news isn't supposed to be fun because it will involve the dregs of society in the political process. making them simultaneously hyper uninformed but also hyper motivated to do things. a dangerous combination that will destroy civilization
Iām sorry if you think I said something I never did maybe itās you misread it maybe something else. I never said anything is or is not inherently anything or evil.
How you read that is beyond rational comprehension.
I mean your perception of malice here is revealing. Why does someone that isnāt your perceived proper demeanor a ādredge of societyā I mean itās amazing you can rationally make such a specific judgment about someone else without meeting them based in something as arbitrary as do they like comedy or not in their news broadcast.
Sounds like the problem here IMHO is you not these āhyper uniformed and hyper motivated to do thingsā person you appear to disparage without and rational cause.
I mean shouldnāt everyone be an informed and active citizen in a free republic? What destroys civilizations as far as I can tell based on my experience of human history is this kind of mentality that youāre espousing. Consolidate political and social power in the hands of an elite few and expect the āhyper uninformedā to do as theyāre told by the ruling elite.
Sounds like tyranny to me personally, granted there was a time long long ago when the public was largely illiterate and had little if any former education that such a mentality wasnāt absurd.
Pre-industrialization there simply wasnāt enough resources to provide for all our collective basis needs to justify everyone having a basic education. We needed an army of barely educated farmers not an army of educated and informed industrial and technology workers.
Maybe in the 18th century that mentality was valid. Itās why we have an electoral college and why for many decades US States only allowed landowners to vote. It was the only arbitrary and drama ale means of knowing someone was educated at early time of our republic.
We abandoned that though as were changed from a largely uneducated agrarian nation to an almost universally educated industrial nation.
Maybe Iām misunderstanding you, I hope so.
Granted this is a but semantic, I have an ethical concern with all journalists who let impartiality take a back seat for whatever reason.
Which applies to almost all journalists these days not just John Oliver. As I stated, it appears to me youāre more concerned with his ideology which Iām jot and I pointed out.
Why that would cause you to suddenly without any rational reason to lash out in angry profanity is beyond my fucking comprehension.
To each their own, but if weāre going to go to cause each other out because youāre upset or something Iām cool with that too. Shithead. JK š just trying to diffuse this anger from you with flippancy.
If you consider democratic content propaganda then don't even bother trying to change my mind
We really need to stop associating propaganda with negativity. Thatās the tragic consequences of the 20th century. Also define ādemocratic contentā there are plenty of things Oliver says that has nothing at all to do with democracy and making false blanket statements from both him or you to justify refusing to defend your opinions isnāt democratic just an FYI.
Left wing, eight wing, who cares when both want to take out republic and representative democracy and make it into a one party failed state like Syria or Libya under Qaddafi.
We need both sides to sit down and stop fueling the media frenzy thatās destroying our nation.
@YOLOIFIC OK IM QUOTING YOU DIRECTLY HERE"
"I do have some ethical concerns about how Oliver, Colbert, et al have turned news from an objective and facts based pursuit into a highly subjective pursuit based on entertainment."
that sure sounds like you have some problem with it but i see what you mean now.
biased news is bad, biased news disguised as comedy is even worse
If you feel that biased new ādisguisedā as comedy is worst than biased new thatās your opinion not mine. Nothing you quoted said or implied that even remotely by any rational sense in my opinion.
Biased news is bad, regardless of how you deliver it. Did a comedian break your heart or something? š¤£
Obviously Iām kidding but please for the love of all things holy. Explain to me how to derive me making any kind of comparison at any point between the morality of using comedy in news compared to using adults throwing temper tantrums on air to deliver the news.
Assuming all media programs are equally impartial or biased, Iād pick the Today Show or Colbert Report or Last Week Tonight with John Oliver over CNN, Fox, etc.
Former makes me laugh while learning about the news, latter makes me want to garrote myself to end the suffering.
I think being sodomized with a baseball bat wrapped in bar wire is more pleasant than watching the mainstream news media even if they were full of partisan BS.
But regardless of my feelings about media changes all that matters is are they impartial or biased and itās biased across the board.
@YOLOIFIC so your argument in favor of them is they feel good? that's pure hedonism
you shouldn't be feeling good while consuming the news. it makes you watch it more often and think less critically of it. making a public that is more interested and less knowledgeable. a terrible mix for democracy
Heās a comedian. He does a decent job at that apparently given his commercial success. I do have some ethical concerns about how Oliver, Colbert, et al have turned news from an objective and facts based pursuit into a highly subjective pursuit based on entertainment.
Granted this decline in journalism isnāt limited to comedians exclusively. The mainstream media is becoming more and more biased and are abandoning objectivity a little more each day.
the vile offspring of the great jon stewart. john oliver can be funny but he is a deeply dangerous force in the world. political comedy disguised as news. deeply biased, cynical, and willing to say anything to be popular.
his segments never tell the full story, never convey the opinions of those who disagree with him fairly, and radicalize his already narrow minded audience

He use to be really good until he became shill for the left. He's just another agenda-driver for the woke.
Not really a good news critique or stories if just another version of junk you can see on CNN.
He's an idiot when it comes to speaking about serious matters. He's pretty funny in some of his older comedic stuff, such as his minor role in the show, "Community."
An NPC yuppie gum flapper who repeats the same repetitive garbage as every other liberal talk show. Can't believe I actually thought he was original.
I liked John Oliver all the way back when he was on John Liebowitz's Daily show. I mean when you think about it. What is this but a spinoff of that show.
Propagandist pretending to be a comedian. Lot of that going around.
Heās more of a commentator than a comedian; I donāt find his insights infesting or particularly informative either..
I listen to him a lot. It's fair to say he's a idiot.
You just KNOW that Oliver is KICKING himself for wrapping up that skit with Adam, when he'd be feasting off this content FOR DECADES !!😁🤟
He is kinda funny, I like how he actually goes deep into one issue.
English Fag that isn't funny at all. What I flush down the toilet is funnier.
I used to like him before Trump, after that things got weird.
I'm not sure who he's owned by. Maybe same boss as colbert?
I liked the first few seasons but his best work was the Daily Show.
I donāt take him seriously and heās stupid.
Liked him better before he went full woke.
I have to pass. Never heard of him!
he's a valuable ally for progressivism
He is a total jackass
I don't think about him.
Like the shillier version of jstew
I think he is a British cunt
I don't find him especially funny.
I think he is gay
horses butt.
He's a moron.
Just another wanker.
Never heard of him
dont know who he is
Who is he?
Never met him
