Jacques Brel has never been a favorite singer of mine.
I don't like too much the way he sings but my dislike for this person actually came after I saw the 1973 movie "L'Emmerdeur" with Lino Ventura.
Don't get me wrong, he plays fabulously but the character he impersonates in that movie made me dislike him, just like I dislike Leonardo DiCaprio for several of his roles.
A singer that I like on the other hand and that lived at about the same age as Belgian Jacques Brel is Boris Vian.
His song "Le Déserteur" is a song about a drafted French citizen that intends to desert the Indochina war in the 1950's. The lyrics are fantastic.

I'm french and I've never heard of this song before, I love it; Its very pretty and mellow.
I love the way the piano is simply playing in the back and how the guy is effortlessly singing. Very nice!!
It's quite pretty, and haunting. I like the quiet parts much better. I think it's over-orchestrated at times and it detracts from the mood. Less is more.

It reminded me of the old Neil Diamond song "If you go away". It turns out that that is what it is.
