I think Nick Hornby put it best in his book "High Fidelity":
'Did I listen to pop songs because I was miserable, or was I miserable because I listened to pop songs?'
I think we connect to a lot of different songs and for different reasons.
Asking your question, I tend to prefer songs with good lyrics - I can forgive a lot if the words are right. In almost all genres.
I like classical music and feel connected to it as well, specially if it is in soundtracks a lot and I make the association.
I could write more, but maybe that bored you.
The only song I feel a connection to and which I don't like listening to it, is "What is love" by Haddaway. The reason for that is because I was listening to that song when my girlfriend in 2007 broke up with me. She actually sent me an SMS but all the same that song reminds me of that painful moment. It also brings back memories with her I've done my best to suppress.

How to save a life by the fray
Visiting hours and afterglow by Ed Sheeran
I feel most connected to the songs I write because it is made connected to my life. Other than that I feel connected to the songs of Alan Walker the most.

I didn't realize this was an edited version that added a backing track. I just grabbed the first link. The song is only vocals, no instrumentals at all.
