A coworker introduced me to D&D. It was fun for the few times we played. It was 5e.
There was this one bullshit encounter once. The bard cast sleep on 4 goblins, they all fell asleep all but one goblin were asleep. On their turn, the first one ran to the next, woke him up, then the awakened gobbo ran to the next, woke the next gobbo up and repeat till all gobbo's were awake. I still call bullshit to this day.

Been playing DnD for 8 years, DMing for about 5 , and currently hearing up to run another campaign for my party that's been together for 3 years.

I only really know DnD 5e, though, so some of the classic lore I'm still unfamiliar with.

I like 5e the best from the D&D versions I played. It is easier to have fun and less work. It does have some depth, but not too much. I prefer only using the 3 core books.

This is the 3rd year I’m playing it with some of my friends, we play it weekly! I think it’s good to improve phantasy mind capability and elasticity, I think it’s good to spend some time playing it. Obv is perceived like a nerdy thing, but there are various attitudes you can take on it, since you can be the all knowledge nerd or the one who wants just have fun… and I’m the second one.
I like playing magic and playing a lot dumb but evil characters, since we play 5e so roleplay is quite important.

I work with 3 Software teams, D&D is pretty much the thing for evenings in or late nights at work.

we have some decent DMs and great plots, improv etc

some of them have deep backstories.

It has always been there, in the background. Always keeps appearing, before Stranger Things it was in Big Bang Theory, Community, Freaks and Geeks, That's 70's Show, etc. Even more likely to appear if the show likes to reference pop culture and different fandoms.

Shows like Critical Role are very famous in the gaming circles. Thankfully there are less people these days claiming it's satanism and all kinds of nonsense.

I have watched more than 1000 hours worth of dungeons and dragons content, if not 2000. Unfortunately, never got to play! But yeah, I'm pretty knowledgable and also a game dev, it's definitely close to my profession.
I haven't watched stranger things, so I wouldn't know.

i enjoy creative tabletop games but don't have enough people who would want to try them with me. i made my own tabletop solitaire where i draw trading cards (mostly yugioh) and use the cards i draw to determine random encounters and beastiary and the plot and to make characters. It's like having thousands of pieces that all fit in one box

The Big Bang Theory was the show that made Dungeons and Dragons and also Cosplying popular. Strangers thinking is just piggy backing of it after BBT made it popular.

I doubt Stranger Things had that much of an impact on its popularity.

I've dabbled in it a few times and It heavily depends on the group you play with as far as enjoyment goes.
