What are some effective hobbies?

Reading, books, learning.

Music. Becoming a musician and learning to play a musical instrument and/or to write music.

Learning a foreign language. Good for the brain, you grow as you learn more about the other culture, you meet people from that culture as you seek out those to practice the language with.

A sport... tennis, weight lifting, kick boxing, golf, frisbee golf, basketball, bowling... etc. It is good to stay in shape, strengthen your body, meet other people who are into that sport.

Games and game night... chess, cards, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Scene It, Catch Phrase... whatever you like. Get together with others who like games and have fun nights of comradery.

Nature loving. Bird watch and learn about birds or flowers and go hiking into nature to appreciate the wonders in the world. Maybe take up gardening and grow plants at home or in the backyard.

Join a charity and focus on others and serving those in the community that need help. You'll get the joy of helping and get a healthy perspective as you put others above yourself.

Listening to podcasts or reading.
Podcasts can give you more information to a variety of topics and are less attention-seeking than newspapers or online communities because especially if they are longer they often talk more about the topic than the regular news.
And because you just hear them they don´t have these over-dramatising headlines like many newspapers or online-websites have.
I personally do that doing laundry or while cooking.
Reading because it can enhance your creativity and it doesn´t keep your awake like sitting and watching something on a screen.
Plus you could also choose reading an ebook if you prepare reading on a tablet.

My favorite hobby is playing board games like Catan, Stratego, Armadora, Clue, Clash of the Cards, and other games like that. Do you play board games?  I think it is fun.

What do you mean effective? Hobbies are just suppose to be fun to you, stamp collecting is effective to someone who likes stamps.
