Ledger becomes his Joker was the actual Joker in the comics. He'd gone full-blown baddie by then.

Phoenix Joker is very close but not exactly like the Joker in the comics. He was still battling between being a goodie and a baddie.

I think they all bring thier own spin, thier own flair to the character. But for my money I think Ledger brought the best combination of comical, criminal, sadistic, insanity. For the longest time I refused to watch the dark knight trilogy because having grown up as Nicholson playing the Joker in the 1989 I didn't want to see a different joker. But as much as I like Nicholson I have to admit Ledger nailed the character. And took it to greater heights.
