I'm a guitarist. Rock music is based on blues. The originals like Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and B. B. King had some serious soul.

Then Eric Clapton gave blues an edge. Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, David Gilmore and the Stones were originally blues men. John Mayall, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, Steve Winwood, and John Lord all started on the British blues scene.

Later came people like The Allman Brothers, the Winter brothers, Rory Gallagher, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The list is endless.

I didn't even mention stand alone vocalists like Billy Holiday, Etta James, Jimmy Witherspoon or Janice Joplin.

Jimi Hendrix started out learning from the greatest blues men and then took electric guitar to its ultimate level. But he could still tear your heart out with his blues guitar.

Beginning in 1970 when I was 16, I went to hundreds of concerts throughout the decade and saw everybody.

But I have to say that listening to an hour long blues program on the radio, or listening to local blues purist bands rehash the same old shit gets old pretty quickly. I prefer fusion, innovation, effects, and edge with dynamic highs and lows. I love how people took blues to a new level.

That being said, blues guitar has more tasty technique and emotion than pure shredding, which can also get boring.

Jazz is inconsistent. Blues is depressing. If someone is depressed, go exercise your coping mechanisms somewhere else or get therapy or take meds. The world is depressing enough without having to hear someone whine about it.
