My grandfather came to America when he was a teenager. He had a traditional Italian name. When my father came back from WW2 he wanted to start a business. There was a lot of ani-Italian sentiment at the time. Everyone assumed that if you were Italian you were in the Mafia. He "Americanized" his last name by shortening it and removing some vowels. It just sounds like a generic name. I thought about changing it back before I got married but it seemed like a lot of trouble so I did not. I would like to change it back.
