I was thinking about classical music when I thought of this, but it could apply to any music that's good without the use of lyrics.

Much agreed. Film soundtracks come into mind. They often need to deliberately refrain from involving lyrics since it'd be too distracting with dialogue in the foreground.

Excellent example! I love that one too. One of the things I miss from the 80s is that a lot of film soundtracks often associated themes with characters or scenes. So very often every time a character shows up, they'd play a theme song associated with that character. Then we associate that song with the particular character.

I don't see many films doing this much these days, only some TV shows like HotD. A childhood fave for me was Neverending Story, like with this theme that always played whenever Atreyu or Sebastian was flying on Falkor:

@Worst I loved season 1. It started off a bit slow with lots of exposition but the stakes really started to get sky-high midway into it.

@chefpapichulo One of the ones I really liked that way was Fugitive (1993). It's a solid thriller but the soundtrack takes it to a whole new level in my perspective with strong thematic motifs and with the soundtrack doing a whole lot of heavy-lifting to set the mood of each scene.

Yeah I'm getting like a suspense vibe from it and then it elevates and there's a sense of mystery. Makes perfect sense with it being a movie about a fugitive lmao.

I think on that general point as well, it applies to all sorts of artistic media. I am not allergic to lyrics whatsoever; sometimes they do heighten the music. Yet it's kind of multimedia to me at that point.

As an example, say a painter paints a very sad building. If he has to put blatant text on it like, "This is sad," I think that cheapens it. It's trying to tell us how to feel when the visuals should already suffice. That's a very blatant and unrealistic example but sometimes I get that impression as though the artist working in a non-verbal medium is relying too much on words to tell us how to feel.

This is honestly such a great comparison. There's nothing wrong with lyrics. Lyrics can be like adding sauce to a steak. The sauce isn't necessary for an amazing steak, but it can add flavor and it hits in a different way.
