Mad Max: Fury Road.

I liked it okay and I didn't mind at all that the film was more about Furiosa than Max. She was the more interesting character to me between the two.

What I didn't like about it was that it was so much non-stop high-octane action. I like the action to come in waves like: suspense, suspense, suspense, suspense, ACTION! Not, ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION... little brief moment of peace... ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION! I start to actually get bored of the action.

Actually the love of that film had me questioning if I'm even an action buff in the first place or a suspense buff. Since my idea of an awesome action movie is more like Dredd (2012):

But actually that film has relatively few action scenes compared to Fury Road. It's mostly suspense with Dredd and his rookie navigating a building full of people that want to kill him.

Same with Road Warrior (my fave of the Mad Max franchise). The action scenes are so thrilling but there's actually relatively few of them and they're very climactic and don't last for ages. I prefer that.

@Sonorous I love that one so much and I love its simplicity. Not too heavy on the lore behind the universe, streamlined exposition, and basically just one Judge and one rookie trapped in a building full of baddies with the ultimate boss at the top.

I enjoy most of those other ones as well (especially Edge of Tomorrow) although I need to work up a mood for Watchmen. Yet it always had a kind of surreal and dream-like quality to me, especially scenes involving Dr. Manhattan.

I've never been able to get into Man of Steel for some reason. Most of Snyder's films aren't generally my cup of tea with the exception of Watchmen and Dawn of the Dead remake.

Robocop (1987) is one I can rewatch over and over with each passing year or two along with Starship Troopers. I love those! I think I've seen them both over 30 times now.

@Sonorous I'm not the biggest fan of the new one but it might be a generational thing. A lot of the satire in the original doesn't seem as present in the new one and it doesn't seem quite as edgy to me or subtly deep in its exploration of what it means to be human vs. machine. Yet I like that one scene in the new one where he's so shocked finding himself as nothing but vital organs and head on a stand. That was a legit body horror scene to me.

@Sonorous Have you seen The Witch (2015: AKA VVitch)? I love that one and watch it every few years. This opening scene always captivates me with the father being banished for actually being too puritanical by the Puritans.

@Sonorous Brimstone has a somewhat similar appeal to me being like a horror film set in a similar period. I like VVitch much better although I like just about any decent horror that's also a period piece.

@Sonorous Cheers! I'm curious what you think of it if you check it out. It seems to have a divisive effect on some audiences. It helps to watch it with subtitles if the old-sound English is difficult to understand. I've heard some people complain that they couldn't understand the dialogue and that might be part of why it's so divisive among viewers.

I notice I tend to be a easy guy to please when it comes to movies. Most movies I watch I'd rate a 5+. This is because if I watch the entire thing, then it had to be interesting enough to engage me for that long in the first place. 🤣 Oh & I always love when movies have dialog that's hard to understand. It makes it feel more real. Because when I go out into the world, I find myself constantly saying "I'm sorry, I didn't get that. Could you repeat that?"

@Sonorous I do the same a lot with, "pardon?" I find dialects helpful to transport me into the time period and culture. I do think some go overboard with it, like fantasy films that actually have lengthy dialogues in Elvish requiring the audience to read subtitles when an English dialect might have had the same effect. Generally I prefer dialects to completely different languages.

But yo I watched the witch last night & that movie was wild. More creepy than scary to me. Brilliant acting. Felt real & authentic. Like I was watching a good play. I did not expect that ending but I was not disappointed!

@Sonorous Yay, glad you enjoyed it! I think it's one of my favorite horror films combining a sense of lingering suspense and dread with an intense psychological family drama and at least a very seemingly authentic depiction of the time period and culture (I'm not such a history buff to pick on historical inaccuracies; I only care that it feels authentic and successfully transports us to a different world).

It's definitely more creepy than scary but I've watched so many horror films since early childhood that I think I've become largely desensitized to the more immediate sensation of "scary". What I've never been desensitized towards is something that has a more lingering effect: the creepy, the dreadful, the more thought-provoking type of discomfort that can leave us mulling over something long after.

The superb acting also really helps me a lot. The only horror films that really tend to unhinge me these days are ones with A+ acting. Ralph Ineson sounds like he's been eating gravel all his life with that voice yet I thought it works so well for the film and I especially think Kate Dickie's performance as the hysterical mother losing her mind really sold the drama for me.

There's another one that appeals to me in a similar way as VVitch called Jug Face (2013). In that one, the supernatural element is more in the foreground rather than VVitch but, similarly, it transports us into a very foreign culture and explores the effects of the supernatural element on a family and community. It's also much more in the creepy and lingering dread category than scary.

It's substantially lower-budget than VVitch. Even though VVitch itself is low-budget, Jug Face is shoestring and was straight to DVD. Yet the acting is still top notch and I think there's some chance you might like it if you liked VVitch as well.

Yeah I notice that I don't care if a movie has certain historical or even scientific inaccuracies. I tend to be more interested in how it all pans out & how it makes me feel.

I do like his voice. 🤣 I'd fr watch a movie just for his voice. And yeah her acting was great! There wasn't a moment that made me remember it was a movie tbh. Like for instance, recently I watched the mission impossible movie & some scenes reminded me that it's a film. Like maybe how the people were talking & definitely how the villain acted. But then Tom Cruise got on screen & I was immersed again. 🤣

Oh & low budget movies that seem like low budget movies are a pet peeve of mine. 🤣 For me, the execution is very important. It's why I prefer more modern movies because they tend to be higher budget & visual quality than the older ones.

@Sonorous Same on the feeling and I just look at it all as fiction. If I want accuracy, I can watch documentaries (and often do and love them, but they hit a different mood). I actually don't get excited when a film opens with, "Based on a true story," since I think that's potentially inhibitive to the dramatic nature of the film if the writers had to be constrained to staying reasonably faithful to something that actually happened.

I also prefer hearing things like explosions in space even though space technically lacks the medium to transport the sound to the camera. I don't want to watch some silent space battle in a film, or worse, play a video game which removes such auditory feedback in favor of realism.

The reason I often like fiction to take strong inspiration from history or seriously consider how a fictional technology impacts a culture (as in the case of sci-fi) is that I find it adds a great deal of consistency to the world-building. The worlds and cultures I find most interesting are built by coming up with and consistently sticking to an established set of rules.

Fantasy is a genre that has always been a bit iffy to me (sometimes I like it, sometimes not) for this reason, as even the most thorough writers often have difficulty establishing the rules of their fantasy worlds upfront and consistently sticking to them throughout when things like magical powers are abundant throughout. Such a world of abundant magic would likely take on a shape in the way of cultures, political systems, architecture, security, military strategy, etc, in ways radically different from history yet a lot of fantasy resembles the stereotypical feudal European villages and castles + magic slapped in.

@Sonorous I really like suspense and I don't think suspense actually comes from the unknown, but instead the known. It's not suspenseful to me if our protags are in an epic losing battle and a wizard just saves the day with some new magical spell the writer introduced in that moment. It's not suspenseful to me if a major character dies and we later discover that they can be magically resurrected. Those are suspense killers from my perspective as they make it so we can't predict anything that will happen; when anything goes, I don't have reasons to worry since I have no idea what could happen (best or worst).

On low-budget films, I'm usually the same way except when they have a truly original concept and superb writing. I tend to forgive those. With Jug Face, I think it has both with superb acting of a kind we generally don't see in shoestring budget films, including the legendary Sean Young. A lot of low-budget horror films often lack that superb acting and it often makes it only appealing in a campy way if it's to appeal at all. Jug Face is quite exceptional to me that way.
