I guess kind of the same as you, but my primary favorite is hip-hop for sure. Ideally not the current variety available, I’m an “old head”, haha.

90s and to a lesser degree, the 00s, were the best, in my opinion. Post-2010, what I end up like much more few and far between. I’m trying to adapt and learn to appreciate the Gunnas and the DDGs of the world, but my heart always calls me back to the “good ol’ days.”

Dipset was awesome in the 00s.

Also loved all the old big names from the 90s: Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Mobb Deep, 2Pac, NWA, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg’s first album was classic, Naughty By Nature, Wu-Tang Clan, plus some of the “Native Tongues” stuff like A Tribe Called Quest, Brand Nubian, De La Soul (prefer their late 90s stuff though, unpopular opinion, haha)…. then the 00s was Dipset, little Wayne, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, The Lox, plus I had an underground phase in the early 00s where I loved BlackStar, Company Flow, a bunch of people you probably wouldn’t know. I also knew Eminem before most people, he was the start of my underground rap phase in the late 90s. Nobody would listen when I played him, and like a year and a half later they’re calling me asking if I saw the new white rapper on MTV with the “My Name Is” song🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I was mad about that, lmfao. First 2, and maybe 3 albums were good, but I fell off him in like ‘02. Still arguably the GOAT, based on straight up skills. Didn’t always love his songs, but the lyrics were always outstanding, especially when he was underground, and he had more of a “drugged out” flow, and did less of what I refer to as his “chainsaw voice” that we know more from his later work. He used to rap more…I guess “lazily”, but I loved it.

You ever hear his famous mainstream song “Stan”, with the obsessed fan? When the kid says “I even got the underground shit that you did with Skam”….. this is it. It was I think the second time I ever heard him, maybe 1998…

I heard that verse, along with the one from “I Just Don’t Give A Fuck” from his first album, when it was still an unknown single (first purchase of his that I ever was able to make…. had to just physically go to music stores back then, no searching online and buying it. We had the Internet, but it wasn’t like it is now, or even 20 years ago. It was like Year 3 of the internet, lmao), and I was an instant fan. Like we had never heard anything like that before.

Anyway, I’m rambling, but my main hip-hop these days is the Griselda crew, and Freddie Gibbs. I’m trying with the “mumble rap”, but it’ll take a while to grow on me, I think. Griselda and Gibbs sound like old hip-hop, so I can get new music but it’s not of the new style👍
