i'm glad i was able to find this, sometimes in music there's a perfect storm, and for me this is one of them

with the old timers i work with i get to hear a lot of the backstage drama from the early days of American Idol, before it was a complete sellout like it is now

this one was about Kelly Clarkson, who has no formal music training and is so easygoing a lot of people don't realize she's a perfectionist (like someone else we all know 🙄). back when she was on American Idol she did an old standard one night with a full studio orchestra, very rare (and hugely expensive) for that show in any of its iterations

coming from the orchestra world myself, and my mother and my grandparents, one of the rules i know well is don't ever piss off the band. Kelly did that in the rehearsals for this one with her overly-demanding style, but really she was only looking for excellence, and to win the show

some of these guys were among the biggest studio and session musicians in New York and Hollywood, and they've played with the Sinatras and the Streisands and the Elton Johns from the olden days

to get back at Kelly for her perceived haughtiness, they decided to push her while she was on television, almost unheard of in show business, pushing the tempo faster and faster so she would go off the rails. you can see it and hear it on the video, and a couple of times you can see it in Kelly's eyes when she realizes what's going on

but Kelly held on and used her instinctual musicality to push back. while they speeded up, she slowed down. she made it to the end of the chart not only under budget and on time as they say in the biz, but having delivered a perfect performance and gotten even with the players

Disclaimer. I am not a Beach Boys fan in general, I usually consider them a bit campy, hokey, however. There is this one song that just about defies a breakdown by someone learning music theory. The chord structure is pure magic and other renowned musicians of the era were fairly awestruck by it's perfection (The Beatles for one)
