    Aliens

    The Godfather

    GoodFellas

    Edge of Tomorrow

    2001: A Space Odyssey

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Colossus: The Forbin Project (which is essentially impossible to view now since it is anti-AI.)

I would say Star Wars but nobody now can see Star Wars as is it was from 1977 so I can't see it anymore to see it "way too many times, but still love". It's all bullshit now with "Episode IV: A New Hope" and crap that like. I want to see Star Wars as I saw it in 1977... with this opening crawl.

and this is how we reacted...

I want to mention Aliens again for a reason.

When Aliens was released in summer 1986, I was 23 and just finished my first year of graduate school. When I saw the commerical trailer on TV for this movie, I instantly knew I was going to see it; after all, I saw the original Alien in theaters in 1979, but this trailer was something else entirely.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/oSeQQlaCZgU

So, that summer, I went by myself to the Clifton Country Mall and plopped my ass down all excited and then I saw the opening titles with that ominous music and then the opening scene... and knew I better fasten my seatbelt as I was going to be scared shitless. It is the first movie that I ever paid to see multiple times. I saw it 3 times in 2 weeks.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/1SNuPBWC81Ihttps://www.youtube.com/embed/tMkV_NkiZjE

Unfortunately, the theatrical release omitted a pivotal scene explaining that Ripley had a daughter who only just died the year before Ripley woke up from her 57-year hypersleep. That scene helped establish the motherly connection between Ripley and Newt.

From Roger Ebert's 3.5 star review:

    Aliens

    Action 135 minutes ‧ R ‧ 1986
    Roger Ebert
    July 18, 1986

The ads for “Aliens” claim that this movie will frighten you as few movies have, and, for once, the ads don’t lie. The movie is so intense that it creates a problem for me as a reviewer: Do I praise its craftsmanship, or do I tell you it left me feeling wrung out and unhappy? It has been a week since I saw it, so the emotions have faded a little, leaving with me an appreciation of the movie’s technical qualities. But when I walked out of the theater, there were knots in my stomach from the film’s roller-coaster ride of violence. This is not the kind of movie where it means anything to say you “enjoyed” it.

    ...

And then the movie escalates into a nonstop war between human and alien.

It’s here that my nerves started to fail. “Aliens” is absolutely, painfully and unremittingly intense for at least its last hour. ... I have never seen a movie that maintains such a pitch of intensity for so long; it’s like being on some kind of hair-raising carnival ride that never stops.

I don’t know how else to describe this: The movie made me feel bad. It filled me with feelings of unease and disquiet and anxiety. I walked outside and I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I was drained. I’m not sure “Aliens” is what we mean by entertainment. Yet I have to be accurate about this movie: It is a superb example of filmmaking craft.

The director, James Cameron, has been assigned to make an intense and horrifying thriller, and he has delivered. Weaver, who is onscreen almost all the time, comes through with a very strong, sympathetic performance: She’s the thread that holds everything together.

The supporting players are sharply drawn. The special effects are professional. I’m giving the movie a high rating for its skill and professionalism and because it does the job it says it will do. I am also advising you not to eat before you go to see it.

    =========

Back to the list, there are probably several other movies that I could include, but I will leave it at that for now.

    Dr. Zhivago

    Forbidden Planet

I would say Planet of the Apes, but it irks me now that it wasn't well thought out. If Stanley Kubrick had done Planet of the Apes, that would have been something.

That would be my favorite Star Trek move, Star Trek IV The Voyage Home, the one about the whales and traveling back to 1960s San Francisco.

There are so many fantastic scenes in the move: Scotty's "Hello Computer"; transparent aluminum, "How do we know he didn't invent the stuff?" (Scotty); "You're not from space are you? (Gillian, whale doctor)"," No, I'm from Kansas" (Kirk); Spock cussing on the bus; "May I go now?" (Chekov, under arrest on The Enterprise carrier); "He gave me a pill and I grew a new kidney" (woman in hospital); "There be whales" (Scotty).

It follows the life of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a Los Angeles bum or hippie-type and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity.
