When you ask a question here, the maximum number of characters for the title is 150. Keep in mind that they automatically put a? at the end of whatever you write, so plan accordingly.

For the details of the question, there is a maximum of 2000 characters.

*sigh* In the Presidential Election of 2000, the George W. Bush campaign often said "Character counts" and "character matters". This was in the aftermath of Bill Clinton's crap with Monica Lewinsky. So, by connecting VP Al Gore with Clinton, he was attempting to implicitly disparage Al Gore as having poor (i. e., "unchristian") character.

Anyway, back to your question...

When you start anything, there is often a maximum character count displayed.
For instance, you can see in the image that I posted above that when you ask a question:
1. The title must have a length between 15 and 150 characters.
2. Any additional details that you add to the question has a maximum length of 2000 characters.

If you can't see that, click on the image to open it in a new window where you will see it enlarged and can read what is written.

With a MyTake, which is an opinion essay, the title restrictions are the same as those of a question, but the maximum character count for the detail (i. e., the essay itself) is 20,000 characters.

I don't know off the top of my head, but I believe when you do an initial opinion to someone else's question or MyTake, you have either a 2000 or 4000 character limit. Additional replies (like this one) have a limit of 1000 characters I believe. I am not sure of these numbers.
