Back then, it was sung a cappella and today to mark the anniversary it was sung the same way before new Zealand beat us for the 72nd time.
Many fans are now saying national anthems should be sung without musical accompaniment, but how do you feel?
IMHO every national anthem I'm aware of should be scrapped and never sung at all. They all seem to be 200 year old crappy songs and severely out of date with todays reality. There should be an international law that every national anthem must be changed / updated every 50 years. You can start with the Divided States Of America and Canuckistan. The Star Speckled Banana and Oh Canada. They both suck.
The Welsh national anthem is one of the best in the world and before today's All Blacks-Wales game [which I watched 'live' here in Thailand] it sounded especially beautiful. So I think you're right @purplepoppy, if everyone's national anthems were sung a capella it would make them sound extra special everytime.
PS: the All Blacks haka is a capella too !
Singing national anthems a cappella can be a powerful and unifying experience. It emphasizes the raw emotion and collective spirit of a group without the distraction of instruments. The purity of voices alone can create an intimate atmosphere that draws people in. However, musical accompaniment adds richness and grandeur, making the anthem more epic and ceremonial. Both approaches have their own unique charm, and the decision often depends on the context and desired impact. 🎶

Here in the US, the national anthem is often sung a capella at the start of sporting events, or it's played by a band. It's rare that it's sung to music.
Best renditions are at a NHL hockey game involving Canadian and US teams, where both anthems are sung.
Sure. Why not. This would be an excercise in conforming to the collective to determine key and tempo. What could go wrong?
I don't think anyone should be required to sing the national anthem. When did mindless jingoism become a substitute for common sense?
No, I don't think so, some national anthems are actually just melodies (no lyrics) - e. g Spanish national anthem.
Some could but many not
