Context matters. A tuxedo looks stupid on the beach. Being dressed inappropriately never looks good, no matter how nice what you're wearing is.

You'll also note that women typically have little to know understanding of men's formal dress, and just like whatever actors wear in magazines or whatever. You can of course pander to that, but the men who do know how to dress will think you're an idiot (and another chunk will think you're odd for not wearing track pants and a jersey).

also, it doesn't have to be for dressy occasions, if you wear them with nice jeans it can look smashingly sexy
