Is "shape wear," like Spanx, for females false advertising, similar to push-up bras?

... Since most guys want a girl who is actually slim and fit and in shape? Seems like many guys get a lot of criticism (especially online) for wanting a girl who is actually attractive, rather than a girl who is overweight. What do you think? If a female is wearing shape wear, is she pretty much done with her attractive years?
But also though, if overweight/chubby/"thick" females are still attractive, then why does shape wear exist at all in the first place? Why cover up the alleged beauty of natural rolls, or whatever?
