Like it’s a whole trend now it seems on social media but I don’t often see it in real life… so am I just in a nasty corner of the country? Girls help me out please! It even is down to bikini styles…

But I know that is more of a chainmail type thing… I just… it fascinates me…

Stylish? That's sort of a fairly malleable, abstract, term. If one defines stylish as in on trend, then sure. Since you are finding a series of these right now. If we define stylish as having class, or sophistication, that's a big zero here. These girls are almost veering into trashy. They belong on the cover of Maxim or the Sports Illustrated special swimsuit edition, or soft porn.

Why don't you see more girls wearing this? Because it's impractical, doesn't cover the nips. It's metal. Chaimail, yes. Some might also say liquid metal. Mesh. Some will be lined with a matching fabric to cover the skin and nips a bit, but the sexiest ones that men gravitate toward (who like this sort of thing) will be straight metal, and you'll see right through it.

Not sure exactly what it's made of, but sometimes, as referenced above, metal is sewn onto a fabric base. Sequins are done in a similar method.

It's not metal, it's something else. But it has a similar drape. That's what appealed to people who liked it. And without nipple covers, it's the kind of fabric where you can see through a bit.
