Girls, I need help understanding clothes sizes?

I want to get my girlfriend a two piece crop top jacket and matching skirt set for her birthday. The problem I'm having is according to the shops size guide, my girlfriend is a medium in her bust measurement and a small in her hips and waist measurements. But as it's a two piece set, it will only allow me to order it in one size, so which size do I order for my girlfriend?

This is a tough one. I am SO picky when it comes to clothes. I have to try them on and see how they fit, even knowing my sizing. If you can't purchase them separate in the appropriate sizes, I would say look elsewhere.

Also, you may want to ask her mom or even, if you can, look at clothing sizes she has to make SURE you have the right sizing. Clothes vary by brand and not all medium fit the same. This is why my SO never buys me clothes. He knows all too well that small or medium in one designer is completely different in another.

It is also going to depend a lot on the cut of the clothing. Is it tight fitting or loose? How does she like things to fit? These are just things to consider when buying clothing for a girl and why I advise against it if she is even the slightest like me.

My girlfriend is very picky also, but she's picky in a sense where she'll only wear clothes from certain brands. She previously mentioned that she like this particular jacket and skirt set from Fashion Nova but as I mentioned before, according to Fashion Nova's size guide, my girlfriend is a medium bust but a small waist and hips. So I don't know what to do really.

And you can't buy them separate? Alternatively, do you have a store that sells that brand in your area? That would be the best bet is to go and see if you can get the store to give the correct sizes for both pieces.

Now, last thing you could try (not sure store policy) is to buy in one size. Once she has her birthday, explain to her that you couldn't separate sizes. I think you could then contact customer service and say "The top fit perfectly but the skirt is too big. Could I exchange the skirt for a small?".

That might work if you have your heart set on this particular brand and piece. If not, looks like you will have to find something where it is not a set and you can size each item.

Unfortunately not, I can't buy them separately, it only allows you to buy the set in one size. And Fashion Nova is an online retailer and don't have any physical stores, so trying on before you buy isn't an option either.

To be honest, I don't know how Fashion Nova's models fit into these two piece sets so perfectly because a lot of the models they use have had breast augmentations and must obviously have the same problem as my girlfriend where their bust measurements are larger.

Honestly, I'd look for a different brand then. Best case scenario is you buy the medium and it fits both top and bottoms. If not, she can return and get something else.

It is that or find a similar style clothing in another brand where you can buy individual pieces in the correct sizing. Not much else you can do really.

If you don't know, you size for the larger/largest area.

Sm and med are very vague. Numbers are the more accurate way to size clothing. But in this case I'd say get her Medium.

But won't that make the jacket fit perfectly but leave the skirt too baggy.

Like I said, you have to fit the larger.
No body is "perfect" and no clothing is either. A jacket has more to fit, is more challenging with elements in the pattern. A skirt is super basic. It only has to hang off the waist.

Get the bigger size. If it’s wrong bigger will go over better. She’ll feel better than if it’s too small.

Save yourself the headache and just take her shopping for the outfit she wants. You can’t buy women’s clothes without her actually trying them on.

Get her the bigger size. An gift outfit being a bit too big is nicer than it being too small. And book her an appointment with a tailor so it fits to her size.

This is a two piece set that can only be ordered in one size, I can either order it in medium and the top will fit and the skirt will be too big or I can order it in small and the skirt will fit but the top will be too tight.
