Depends on the event, White tie, formal, business formal, business casual, semi casual, casual or beach/pool?
All have different expectations, as most people no longer do formal or white tie, I'll assume business formal, shirt tie slacks and a sport coat. Stick to brogues, muted tie colors such as blues and greys. You could possibly get away with a cravat if you are feeling bold. One of the great things about this is if you're over dressed, slipping a tie into your pocket can be done pretty discreetly, then you have a sports coat and a collard shirt which is classic. If you don't have slacks a pair of clean nice jeans can be worn but never with the cravat. Also loafers can be pulled off as well if you don't have brogues (if not why? Maybe an excuse to get a pair).
Hope this helps.
