How much of contrast can you have between your lipliner and lipstick?

I know that lipliner and lipstick does not always have to match. Can you have a large contrast to develop a different look, or should a liner be no more than maybe two shades off?

Depends on what kind of look are you going for. For example a 90s look would be more contrasting. I feel like up to 2 shades off looks best and it's a safer option, but if you're good at makeup and like to experiment, you can try a larger contrast. Ombre effect is very nice when done properly. Just make sure you blend everything well.

I do not mind if the lip liner is one or two shades darker than the lipstick but I don't like to see a lipliner that is much darker than the lipstick.
