Why would someone call you names as 'Medusa' regularly?

So, I have type 2B wavy hair. In my entire class, I'm the only one with prominent curls. I love my hair. However there's a group of guys in my class who call me names in my face and even behind my back. They call me 'Medusa', the mythical character that has snakes growing on her head.

Besides, my ethnicity is naturally brown and I am brown too but of a light shade, sort of glowy light wheat. I have many times been mistaken as a mixed race person though my skin, no matter how light it is, a bit different from white skin. It's a desirable trait in my community. These boys also comment on my skin tone and say that I'm scary and ghastly. But I can't say anything against their skin tone since it would immediately be considered colorism.

What can I do? This is seriously affecting my self image.
